Deep within the captivating rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day after day, guarding his wards imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming website “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
